Navigational and hill walking classes - indoor and outdoor training

Do you want to get in to the hills more often but feel anxious or lacking in confidence?

Would you like to go to the next level with your walking?  Do you feel you need a boost with your map reading or compass skills?  Do you know what you would do should an incident arise?  Do you want a refresher course from a trained and qualified hill walker?

I am a Hill and Moorland Leader and qualified under Mountain Training, a Duke of Edinburgh Gold assessor and First aider and I am based right here in Harrogate.

I can tailor a course for you covering detailed sessions on maps, compass bearings, how to measure distance, first aid, incident management and on essential equipment.

I will also offer you some outdoor training in the Dales so you can practise your navigational techniques with me there to guide you. Plus, I can teach you about the natural landscape if you wish.

Typically there would be 3/4 hours in a classroom environment and then 4 hours in the hills near Grassington.

Me and Freddie

Andrew Inggall -

Just a quick note to thank you for a very informative and memorable day today.  I eventually learned the three skills I needed to feel competent in using a map and compass.  Thanks for your patience and recognition of how empowering I felt it was.  Can't wait to practise on my next walk.  Not quite sure why, but it really brought me closer to nature.

Carol O-Keefe -

Just to say "thank you" again for your professionalism and patience during our map reading course.  It has been a pleasure to meet you.

Elizabeth Rushmer -

Thanks again for the course I really enjoyed it, I know the weather & my wet foot made it look like I didn't but I did! It has given me lots more confidence & I definitely want to continue using the skills when we go out & I even fancy having a go at orienteering now.

Rebecca Walker -

I recently attended a map reading and navigational skills course which was super helpful. I learnt so many skills including the correct way to read grid references, how to recognise a multitude of different features on the map, how to plan a route through tricky areas and how to use a compass to find my way. Also got to explore some beautiful Yorkshire Dales countryside whilst putting my new found skills into action which was an added bonus!
